Electric steering rack: coding or calibration after replacement?

After replacing an electric steering rack or steering column, one question comes up often: does the new part need coding or calibration? It depends on the vehicle, steering system and replaced component.

When electronic work may be required

Depending on the vehicle, basic settings or communication with other control units may need to be restored. This may include initialization, steering-angle sensor calibration, torque-sensor calibration, basic settings or checking/clearing fault codes.

Why not every rack is plug-and-play

Physically similar references can use different electronics or configurations. Before installation, check OEM reference, vehicle generation, LHD/RHD, connectors and assistance type.

Prepare before diagnostics or coding

• VIN / chassis number;
• OEM reference of the old part;
• reference of the installed part;
• OBD fault codes;
• symptoms before and after replacement;
• photos of the label and connectors.
